Senior Backend Developer

Music Vine is looking for a Senior Backend Developer

About Music Vine & Uppbeat

A Leeds-based start-up launched in 2015, Music Vine has built a reputation as one of the world’s leading music licensing platforms for video professionals. At the heart of the company is a mission to democratise music licensing, providing productions of all scales with access to world-class music, while operating a model that is fair for artists.

In January 2021, Music Vine launched a brand new platform, Uppbeat, which is poised to revolutionise how YouTubers and other content creators access music, while enabling musicians to earn from a booming untapped market.

Job Details

Uppbeat has experienced rapid growth since its launch, and as such we are looking for an experienced backend developer to join us and help keep the momentum going!

Both our Music Vine and Uppbeat platforms are built in PHP using the Symfony framework and we’re looking for someone who can write clean, scalable code to help us implement new features and optimise site performance for ever-increasing numbers of active users.

You will work directly alongside our Technical Director to plan and execute the implementation of new features, to make improvements to the existing system via refactoring, optimisation and writing tests, and to maintain and ensure the health of our backend systems.

So if you have excellent coding skills, thrive on solving technical challenges and like the idea of leaving your mark on the technology of a rapidly growing music platform, then we want to hear from you!

Senior Responsibilities

  • Propose, plan & implement improvements to product quality, security, and performance that have particular impact across your team & the business as a whole.
  • Lead on identifying and strategically addressing performance and optimisation problems, particularly at large scale.
  • Participate in occasional evening & weekend calls to assist troubleshooting security operations and urgent engineering issues.
  • Provide mentorship for Junior and Intermediate Developers joining your team to help them grow in their technical responsibilities and remove blockers to their autonomy.

Responsibilities

  • Develop features and improvements to the Uppbeat and Music Vine products in a secure, well-tested, and performant way.
  • Lead on defining & improving our backend code standards for style, maintainability, and best practices. Maintain & advocate these standards through code review.
  • Recognise impediments to our efficiency as a team (“technical debt”), propose and implement solutions.
  • Represent Music Vine and its values in public communication around specific projects and community contributions.

Experience & Skills

Significant professional experience working with the following is crucial:

  • PHP 7.0+
  • Experience with the Symfony PHP framework
  • MySQL
  • Version control systems (e.g Git)

We are also looking for:

  • Experience integrating with Stripe, our payment platform
  • Experience with AWS services (especially S3, RDS & EC2)
  • Experience with nginx
  • Experience with Docker. While this is not something we currently use, we recognise it as a key roadmap item.
  • Experience with database systems such as mySQL
  • Experience working on backend systems that can handle high traffic loads
  • Demonstrated capacity to clearly and concisely communicate about complex technical, architectural, and/or organisational problems and propose thorough iterative solutions.
  • Experience with performance and optimization problems and a demonstrated ability to both diagnose and prevent these problems.
  • Comfort working in a highly agile, intensely iterative software development process.
  • Positive and solution-oriented mindset.
  • Effective communication skills: Regularly achieve consensus with peers, and clear status updates.

Why Work at Music Vine?

  • Be part of an industry-shaping company which is revolutionising the way content creators access music.
  • Be part of a vibrant, dynamic team with a friendly ethos and great work ethic.
  • Have an impact! At a startup, every team-member counts. Enjoy the opportunity to contribute directly & help shape the company’s journey.
  • Scope for growth. We are a company with ambitious plans – that means plenty of opportunity for career progression and personal growth.
  • Work with flexibility. We operate flexi-time and will only require partial hours to be worked in the office.
  • Whether it’s Friday drinks, quarterly meals on the company or an Xmas outing, we work hard but make sure to enjoy ourselves along the way!

28 days annual leave plus bank holidays.  Location is flexible.

Closing date for applications is 4 March 2022.
