Lead Infrastructure Engineer

  • About the roleCDS are looking for a Lead Infrastructure Engineer to join their team. A hands on role, this will appeal to candidates who enjoy a varied and evolving portfolio, offering the opportunity to work with many different projects, suppliers and clients.Reporting to the Head of Client Platforms this role will have line management responsibility for the Infrastructure Engineers.Key to understanding the role is that we are not an internal IT department. We provide managed services across many different platforms which, though similar in some areas, can differ in others.

    Essential Skills

    Line Management Experience.
    Microsoft Azure Certifications.
    Strong knowledge of Splunk.
    Strong knowledge of Windows Server Infrastructure and configuration.
    Strong knowledge of Web Services, Web Apps/ IIS etc.
    Strong knowledge of Networking, i.e. routing/ DNS etc.
    Strong knowledge of Virtualization, Vmware/ HyperV.
    Strong knowledge of Azure and Aws Cloud technologies.
    Firewall configuration and troubleshooting.
    Proactive platform monitoring.
    Load Balancer Setup and Configuration.
    Active Directory Setup and configuration.
    Planning for and executing patching of servers, using tools such as WSUS.
    Powershell knowledge.
    Database knowledge.

    Knowledge in some areas is preferable, though training can be given:

    Microsoft SMTP, POP services
    General web infrastructure skills, e.g. creating new websites, installing SSL certificates etc.
    Aws Cloud technologies
    Involvement in project start-up, for example, scoping, requesting, creating and configuring new servers, liaising with ISPs etc.
    Managing suppliers, for example, liaising with hosting suppliers re.: platform reviews, commission and decommission of devices, performance and security assessments, pen tests etc.
    Management and documentation of assets, e.g. ensuring our managed estate is properly documented, and that all changes are subject to Change and Configuration Management policies/processes

    About You

    Strong interpersonal skills are important, as this role will involve liaising with customers and staff at all levels to ensure procedures are followed, and that deadlines and targets are met.

    Applicants should be comfortable with working in a structured, process-driven environment, where adherence to process and documenting activities are important.

    This is a technical role, where the successful candidate will be expected to take responsibility for important deliverables and provide leadership and Line management responsibilities where appropriate. Candidates should be comfortable with this level of expectation.

    We are interested in candidates with a proactive, flexible, can-do attitude, who are keen to work as part of a team that provides many services, not one. This will be a varied and evolving role, working with several different platforms, suppliers and clients, and should not be viewed as a conventional second or third-line IT support role: it will typically be much more varied that this.

    As a technical role, an appropriate level of experience and certifications (Microsoft /Microsoft Azure certifications) is expected.

    Hours of Work

    Hours of work will be a 7.5 hour day between 0800hrs and 1800hrs, Monday to Friday, as directed (37.5 hours per week). Given the nature of the work, some out of hours work will be required covering evenings and weekends. Advance notice will be given where possible, however, some flexibility is required. Any overtime worked shall be compensated either financially, or by time in lieu.
